TUICO SECRETARIES IN A CAPACITY BUILDING SEMINAR FOR COVID-19 CHALLENGES

Regional Secretaries of the Tanzania Union of Industrial and Commercial Workers (TUICO) from Mwanza, Ilala, Morogoro and Tanga regions are attending a special seminar that will build them up in capacity to deal with challenges brought by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Opening the seminar TUICO National Chairperson Paul Sangeze said the Covid-19 disease is new not only to Tanzania but all over the world, so it needs special knowledge so that TUICO executives in different parts of the country could effectively solve the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Sangeze said the conflict at the Mazava Productions & Fabrics East Africa factory in Morogoro is a good example, where an investor demanded that during the factory break every employee should be paid a subsistence allowance equal to fifty percent of their salary and be deducted from the state tax and NSSF contributions, a crisis that TUICO tackled and eventually more than 2000 workers on vacation while being paid 70 percent of their wages for a three-and-a-half-month period.

The two-day seminar takes place from June 24 to 25 this year in Dar es Salaam and it is organized by TUICO in collaboration with the International Federation of Trade Unions (Industriall) headquartered in Geneva - Switzerland.
